Her voice is soft and cloud-like – sweet and warm tones – capable of switching quickly and effortlessly into the range she desires. Her pop singer tone memorizes the walls around her, echoing positive feedback into her ears. If it wasn’t for your terrible stage freight, you would have been sharing my favorite tunes with the world by now, she thought to herself. Disappointed with her weakness of public speaking, she plumped herself onto her bed letting go of the tightness of breath that was stuck within her diaphragm. She sat up looking at her glossy reflection in the body mirror that sat right across from her, staring back at her. You need to push past this fear; fear isn’t even real – you need to push past this illusion girl. All your life, you’ve been hiding behind your job status and position, along with the falsified respect people give you. Her reflection gave her an idea – why don’t you call up a few of your friends and have them be your judge! She immediately jumped off her bed and went through her contact list. Scrolling, she came across a few of her old time friends – Dina, Trevor and Fazya.

Setting

It was Monday, October 21, 2019. The yellow taxi cab screeched to a holt, and Destinee snatched her two bags for the day, one on each shoulder. She grabbed the taxi handles and pulled it towards her as fast and graceful as she possibly could, looking out the windows to check if the streets were cleared of any persons walking pass. She jumped down onto the grey and concrete, and into the fresh city grey air. The sun was hidden within the clouds and the sea of rushing individuals swayed unevenly as each person created a pathway to their destination. Suits, ties, blues, greys, whites, and browns left and right – like ants, getting their meal for the day. Destinee dodges all the oncoming traffic of humans, gracefully upright making her way to the office for the 9:30 am start. She arrives at the front of the 11 Wall Street building and pause to look up at the tan building almost scrapping along the sky. On the building was a brilliant set of colors – the red, white and blue cloth that saluted her as she walked in. It reassured her that there is a better, stronger future that lies ahead of her tedious hamster wheel job.

SCENE:

It was a beautiful warm winter afternoon, as Destinee took her afternoon visits to grab a cup of coffee as she prepares for the second part of her day. She nonchalantly made her coffee for the millionth time in 7-Eleven when two girls walked into the store.

They went straight to the coffee section as Destinee finished making her choice of drug. She walked in line and shortly after, the two other girls followed. One of them bumped right into Destiness as she was taking to the other.

“Ops, oh! You are gorgeous! Are you from around here?” asked the girl who bumped into Destinee.

She took a seconds to think before answering, “I’m in the neighborhood.” I’m Sweetness, and this is my close friend Lien, I don’t think we’ve met or seen you around before.”

Again Destinee takes a few moments to herself to consciously respond, “I do have a packed schedule that requires all my attention.”

Craft Element: Character

(1) Destinee is as tall as a yard stick. Her skin is porcelain peach, and her hair is honey brown. She speaks in a respectful and soft tone; almost melodically addicting. She wants to become a singer; she enjoys signing with the birds in the mornings, in the shower, as she’s getting dressed for work, and in her mother’s garden. However, she is deathly afraid of public speaking. She finds it heart-reaching to even stand in front of her co-workers’ monthly meetings to address any feedback for her mutil-million dollar stock broker company. The desire to leave the company and become a singer created a flame of immediate action. She started recording her voice and playing it for her friends and peers to receive positive criticism. In doing so, she was able to take the feedback and build courage to then sign in front of them. As scary as she thought it was going to be, she went ahead to do this even though she was in an uncomfortable space. She learned to be comfortable, with her uncomfortabilities.

(2) Trevor’s presence bursts into the room whenever he wears a short sleeved shirt. His bulky football physic makes it almost impossible to not notice. His talk show-ready voice was inviting, just as his willingness to be the best version of himself in every game. He sees himself being the most athletic example on his team, yet his teammates all seem to be ambitious just as he is. He crafts a plan in mind to separate himself outside of practice from the others, so that he can learn different methods and implement newer, more unfamiliar strategic approaches in his practice sessions.
