Lucy: Such a long line at 7-Eleven today.
Lien: Yes. Very long.
Lien smiles politely and nods.
Sweetness: I only wanted to get a slurpee.
Lucy: Me too, and just some snacks for my baby. He just turned a year old. Such an adorable thing. I can never get enough of him. Do you guys have kids?
Lien and Sweetness look at the ground and don’t respond.
Lucy gets curious about why they weren’t responding.
Lucy: Is that a yes? How old are they?
Sweetness: She’s five now…
Lucy: Oh wow, not a baby anymore huh? And you?
Lucy looks at Lien.
Lien: Maybe two…
Lucy: Maybe? How do you not know how old your own child is?
Lucy laughs.
Lien: I don’t know where she is.
Lucy stops smiling.
Lucy: Oh… I’m sorry…
The line starts moving.
Lien: It’s okay.
Sweetness: Look, the line is moving now. And it’s my turn to checkout. I’ll see you guys around.
Lucy: Alright, bye!
Lien: Bye.

Setting

I continued walking into Inwood Park in the daylight towards the direction google maps says to go. I’ve never been to this park before. Parked by the entrance of the park was a typical ice cream truck that was singing music that was still the same tune from when I was five years old. On my left, there was a basketball court where sweaty young adults were shooting basketballs into the hoops and some resting on the side. It was as if I was walking past my middle schoolyard where there was a basketball court and students were hanging out around there and playing basketball. Towards my right, there was a huge baseball field where a team of high schoolers were practicing baseball that reminded me back when I was in the softball team in middle school, practicing with my team just like them. I continued walking and saw that in front of me, there were many green benches on the side that people were talking and sitting on. It felt like I was walking through the neighborhood where I used to live, where elders from the neighborhood would come out and sit in the nearby park and just relax. There were big, old trees all over the park were organized similarly to the park that I used to go to as a child. A little further down, there was the grass area where people were having family picnics or kids just running around. I couldn’t help but think of the times that have already passed.

Imagery

I pushed open the door. As I walked in, a mellow vanilla scent mixed with some sort of fresh flower that I do not know the name of started to hit my nasal slowly. I can almost taste it as the aroma raced up into my brain; it’s almost as if it could be one of Starbuck’s fruit-flavored tea drink. I hit the lamp switch on the wooden table and the room became a sunset. There were no visible dirty clothes around and the closet and cabinet were shut tight. There was another table, the size of a school desk on the other side of the empty queen-sized bed, which carried tons of jewelry, hanging on little hooks made of stainless steel. The couch on the corner of the room seemed to be the color of a peach, but it could also be a tomato color since the room gave a different vibe of color. The zebra wall only had a calendar hanging from it with no posters at all. It was quiet like a street at four in the morning in there and the only sound I could hear was from the lace-curtained window of the occasional cars that were swooshing by.
